WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE REPLACING YOUR AC

This is a very important question many homeowners are asking themselves as we approach the hot summer months. Often the cost savings due to the efficiency of a new system wins over the expense of repairing an old system but what does the rated efficiency mean and why is it so important to consider?
Should I Purchase a New Central AC? This is a very important question many homeowners are asking themselves as we approach the hot summer months. Often the cost savings due to the efficiency of a new system wins over the expense of repairing an old system but what does the rated efficiency mean and why is it so important to consider?

WHAT IS SEER?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is the metric used to rate energy efficiency in residential air conditioning. The higher the SEER rating, the less electricity the system utilizes and the higher the efficiency.

The US Department of Energy regulates this by testing equipment in a lab and establishing the federal minimum efficiency levels. The result of this testing sets the lowest tier of equipment allowed to be legally sold in the US.

Because air conditioning demands are different throughout the US, in 2015 the Department of Energy put into place regional energy efficiency standards. The current SEER minimum for the north is 13 and the south 14. Reports show the next federal minimum efficiency increase is scheduled to take effect January 1, 2023, where minimum SEER will increase 1 point in both the north and the south.

At HVAC by Local Lumber Supply, our most efficient systems range from 18-23 SEER to make sure you have the right system for your home.

WHO SHOULD I HIRE?

The SEER rating is just part of the overall picture. Getting the right system is important but improper installation could negatively impact HVAC performance. These conditions include, but are not limited to:

  • Improperly matched systems
  • Improper system installation
  • Dirty coils
  • Thermostat or control system location or settings
  • Undersized or leaking ductwork
  • Inadequate level of insulation and non-insulated construction methods
  • Dirty or improperly installed air filters

The next time you look to purchase a new air conditioner, consider using HVAC by Local Lumber Supply to make sure you are receiving the performance benefits you paid for.
